Phonics Instruction That Works! There are many strands that are woven into skilled reading and Saxon Phonics & Spelling utilizes them all! The 2022 edition of Saxon® Phonics and Spelling provides targeted multisensory instruction to K—2 students, enabling them to develop a solid reading foundation. This newly enhanced structured literacy program offers teachers easier navigation and embedded point-of-use differentiation to support every level of learner, including struggling readers and English learners.
Saxon Phonics and Spelling is designed for kindergarten through second grade students to build a strong foundation in reading and spelling. The program emphasizes explicit instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics, and fluency, using a multisensory approach that engages visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning modalities. It is suitable for English learners, students with dyslexia, and special education students, providing differentiated instruction to meet diverse learning needs.
The program uses an incremental, spiral methodology, introducing concepts in small steps while continually reviewing previously taught material. This ensures that students retain knowledge and build confidence as they progress. Saxon incorporates a coding system with symbols for short and long vowels, syllable division, accent marks, and suffixes, helping students decode and spell words accurately. Weekly spelling lists, decodable readers, and fluency readers reinforce learning and provide controlled practice.
Saxon Phonics and Spelling is a research based K-2 program that is evidence-based and research-proven. Studies and case reports show significant gains in reading, phonics, and spelling for students using the program. For example, one school reported an increase from 32% to 53% of first-grade students scoring above the 75th percentile on phonics assessments after one year of implementation. The program aligns with the Science of Reading and Orton-Gillingham methodology, combining explicit instruction with cumulative, multisensory practice.
