Scott Foresman Social Studies helps your students become successful learners as they journey into Social Studies. This standards based curriculum engages students by offering multiple learning methods that challenge students to think critically about key concepts. Beyond memorizing places, dates and facts, students are led to develop true understanding of the topics they are learning about. They will be encouraged to take what they currently know about the subject and think further to apply it to new experiences, situations and ideas they will encounter in their own lives. The goal is not only that students will remember what they learn, but also build the foundation to continue applying the subject so they will know how to learn more.
The series begins with familiar ideas in grades K thru 2 with “Here We Go”, “All Together” and People and Places”. It builds in grade 3 to “Communities” and then expands to “Regions” in grade 4. American History is covered in grades 5 and 6 with “The United States” and “Building a Nation.”
This curriculum is available in a bundle, which is a kit that was originally developed for homeschool needs; however, the books included are the same as used in public and private school settings. Bundles include the necessary materials for teacher and student for each level. Grade 1 includes a hardcover student text, workbook, and teacher resource CD-ROM that includes planning suggestions and printable workbook pages and answers, vocabulary pages and answers, assessment pages, activity sheets, "Test Talk" pages and answers, and transparencies. The CD-ROM can be used on either PC or MAC with an Adobe Acrobat Reader. Grade 2, 3, & 4 bundles include a spiral-bound teacher book (also includes pouch cards for vocabulary and reading along with a plastic pouch), hardcover student text, and a workbook that includes vocabulary practice, lesson reviews, reading skills practice, skills worksheets, and project pages. Grade 5 & 6 bundles include both volumes of the teacher edition with pouch cards and pouch, hardcover student text, and workbook. The Bundles include a parent/teacher guide that introduces you to the program and highlights the main elements of the student and teacher materials and provides guidance on setting up lesson plans, pacing, and adapting the curriculum to fit your needs.
