Written to capture the Common Core standards, the 2013 edition of Reading Street continues with the well-rounded reading experience and complete Language Arts instruction found in the previous edition. You will appreciate the focus on systematic skills development in reading and comprehension, vocabulary, and writing skills from the earliest grades. Reading selections represent nearly every genre including realistic fiction, drama, folktales, fantasy, fables, legend, tall tales, historical fiction, poetry, nonfiction, biography/autobiography, procedural text, photo essay, and interview. If you are familiar with the previous edition, you will notice many of the same reading selections. Updated writing exercises provide more depth through cross curricular writing activities and justifying responses using the textbook. Each grade level set includes the Student texts, Readers & Writer’s Notebook, and 1-year of Student and Teacher Digital Access to PearsonRealize.com.
At the heart of the program is the Reading Street Texts (five soft-backed readers in 1st grade; two hardback texts in grades 2-6). Vibrantly full-color and packed with stories and information, the texts offer a variety of reading selections from well-illustrated stories, to non-fiction selections with embedded images. Many lessons provide the common core reference (small and non-distracting), a brief teaching sequence, and discussion questions or writing activities. Strewn throughout are phonics reviews, comprehension skills or strategies, vocabulary helps, and more. Online content referenced throughout the texts is included with the one-year access. Helpful visual strategies teaching key concepts through fun and often humorous mnemonics are found in the Visual Skills Handbook and the Visual Strategies Handbook, which is located at the front of the text. For instance, in the 3rd grade text, the Visual Skills Handbook includes authors purpose, cause/effect, classify/categorize, compare/contrast, draw conclusions, fact/opinion, generalize, main idea/details, literary elements, sequence, and more. The Visual Strategies Handbook includes background knowledge, important ideas, inferring, story structure, summarize, visualize and much more. The back of each textbook includes a complete glossary and an English/Spanish word list.
The soft cover, consumable Reader & Writer’s Notebook provides lesson worksheets, reading logs, strategy response logs, book talk tips, peer conferencing tips, and a writing self-evaluation guide. Activities vary depending on grade and may include phonics, reading comprehension, grammar, writing, research, vocabulary, and spelling. Reproducible.
The One-Year of Student and Teacher Digital Access is pretty impressive. Complete online teacher and student editions, Reading Street’s Sleuth E-texts for close reading passages/exercises, videos (optional close captioning), games/animations, interactive tests, searchable e-readers, and a host of printable pdfs including leveled e-readers, the Reader’s & Writer’s Notebook, practice pages, transparencies and the Grammar & Writing Book for that level. Leveled E-Readers are searchable by Lexile score, DRA level, Guided reading level, and a Reading Maturity Metric. Currently, the online platform is integrated with Adobe Flash, but will be updated to a Pearson platform. Content will remain the same according to the publisher.
There is much to appreciate in this user-friendly program from a major textbook publisher. An abundance of resources allows teachers to pick and chose the best option for their learners, while providing a well-rounded language arts curriculum.
