Sometimes children struggle through social studies instruction because they find it boring. All of those things happened so long ago, after all, so how can they be relevant now? However, history is full of exciting and groundbreaking stories that changed the world, and continue to impact it today. Your student deserves to learn about Social Studies in the age-old format of storytelling. For centuries, people have passed down knowledge through tales and myths, and this is the approach that myWorld Social Studies uses. Starting early, you can get your children interested in tales from long ago using the myWorld Social Studies curriculum from Pearson Education. This system introduces your child to the thrill that is Social Studies through the lens of stories.
myWorld Social Studies: 5th Grade - Grades 5 and 6 are labeled 5A and 5B. These can be completed as one course or over two grades. Grade 5A covers America's beginnings through the Civil War in Chapters 1-9. Grade 5B or Grade 6 picks up at chapter 9-17 and covers the Growth of Our Nation - from the Civil War to present.
As you teach your student, you want to ensure he or she not only absorbs the information, but enjoys the lesson. You can achieve both using the myWorld Social Studies curriculum for homeschooling. The Grade 5 materials employ exciting storytelling techniques to deliver relevant Social Studies content. History is, after all, made up of a series of narratives.
myWorld Social Studies: Grade 5A Building Our Country
The myWorld Social Studies curriculum takes a unique approach to Social Studies education. Rather than guide your student through the subject with dates and bullet points, the curriculum uses storytelling techniques to keep your student engaged. Additionally, myWorld Social Studies was developed using the latest in educational research.
The goal of the curriculum is to help your student learn to love Social Studies and the topics that go with it. Through the lessons you create, your child will come to understand history, government, geography and citizenship. myWorld Social Studies will help your child develop into an active and responsible citizen.
Grade 5 of myWorld Social Studies is broken up into two parts: A and B. The second part can be completed during the same year as 5A or during your child’s next level of curriculum. Your child will have a solid foundation by the end of the myWorld Social Studies: Grade 5A program and you can move on when appropriate with your schedule. In fact, once you reach the end of the curriculum, your child should be able to:
- Use a classic essay format (which includes an introduction, body paragraphs and a conclusion) to write papers on Social Studies topics.
- Read historical fiction in conjunction with nonfiction texts in order to gain a deeper and more personal understanding of important events.
- Read first-hand accounts of people who lived during periods that you study.
- Write accurate timelines of major historic events.
- Identify causes of the American Revolution and Civil War, as well as important battles that took place during both.
- Pinpoint the locations of major events.
- Create a map of the U.S. expansion as it occurred over time.
- Discuss current events.
With this knowledge in hand, your child will be ready to move onto the next stage of myWorld Social Studies. Grade 5A provides a deeper look into the topics surrounding Social Studies using a variety of helpful materials.

MyWorld Program Overview:
This curriculum offers a combination of print and digital instruction that integrates student own stories with the history being studied. The printed portion is the Student Worktext (except in grade K, where the student worktext is a DVD-ROM of printable pages). The basic chapter layout is in six sections: myStory Spark, myStory Video, the lesson pages, a study guide, review and assessment, and myStory Book. MyStory Spark encourages students to consider an important concept from the chapter ahead and write a short opinion piece based on their experiences and knowledge. The myStory Video section features a three-page story that connects the history discussed in the chapter to real life and lays a foundation for discussion and critical thinking activities. The lesson section is written directly to the student and includes support for students in the younger grades who are still learning to read well. Throughout the text you will see vocabulary words highlighted, big ideas summarized, and many small activities that turn this text into an interactive student worktext. While many textbook approaches simply show data, charts, and pictures to students reading the pages, students of this course engage with the text by actually writing the captions for the photos, completing charts and diagrams using the information from the text, creating posters to illustrate ideas, and answering quick questions about maps and pictures (to name just a few of the interactive activities). This is in addition to the Got It? and Try It! sections that ensure the students are understanding the text and able to apply the knowledge they have retained. The Study Guide and Review and Assessment sections provide summaries and questions for each lesson within the chapter. The final section of each chapter is myStory Book. This unique feature uses a free online tool to help students write, illustrate and publish their own story online, using the history studied as a launchpad for ideas. Students can then obtain actual printed copies of their book for a fee. The digital component (see system requirements below) is in two portions: myStory Video and the Teacher Resource Library DVD-ROMs. The myStory Video DVD-ROM contains the video version of the story that students read at the beginning of each chapter like a recorded field trip. The Teacher Resource Library DVD-ROM contains a wealth of helpful resources for the teacher in an easy-to-use drop-down menu tree: a full teacher guide for each chapter with lesson plan summaries; podcasts on teaching the subjects at hand; editable copies of student worksheets; editable tests for each chapter, with answer keys; hands-on activities; leveled reading lesson plans; and other general resources such as graphic organizers, maps, and correlations to national standards. Please note, however, that homeschoolers do not have access to many of the online components.
